About the "To Color the Wind" series

Step into a far away land of mystery, magic and intrigue, as exotic as tales of the Arabian Nights but as tangible and immediate as the sights, sounds and smells you experience in walking through a foreign city street for the first time.

Set in a fantasy world inspired by the tumultuos  ethnic patchwork of 10th century Central Asia, the story follows young Jesipam as she encounters the many competing cultures and value systems of the region while fleeing the wrath of despotic rulers, jealous peers and her own premonitions of looming disaster.  This series tells a tale of spirit guides, prophecies, omens, auras and magic spells, but also a tale of friendship, love, loyalty and the beauty and promise of ordinary moments.

Like many fantasy novels, these books center on a troubled young protagonist with a destiny save her people, but they don't confine themselves to the usual fantasy quest mold.  The “To Color the Wind ” series draws readers into its plot with richly drawn characters and a sense of reality that is rare in the fantasy genre.

These are books to be enjoyed equally by readers who love fantasy, readers who love beautifully turned phrases and penetrating human insights, and those who enjoy emersing themselves in accounts of travels in exotic far way lands.  Lose yourself in the adventure!

 To Color the Wind -

Book 1 :

The Wolf Head Amulet

(Recommended for readers age 10 and up.)

 (From the book cover)

Jesipam shut her eyes again - trying to keep the tears from rolling down her face.  She felt Emmillan’s hand smooth over her arm.  “What will happen to her if her parents refuse to recognize her?  Will anyone make sure that she is educated?  Will she be able to find a place at court?” Emmillan asked.

Memre snorted. “She’s a possible heir to the throne.  An unprotected child, with easy access to privilege and power... if her parents don’t claim her she’ll become a magnet for anyone with a little ambition!  People will be scrambling for a chance to educate her in their own philosophy, and competing to give her favors to make her beholden to them.  Her problem won’t be finding someone to take care of her, but choosing among the leeches, bullies, and zealots lining up for the chance to mold her to their own ends.”

Emmillan’s eyes widened. “That’s horrible!  What kind of person will she become with that kind of influence?”

Memre shrugged his shoulders.  “That is up to her.  There’s nothing we can do about it…not without endangering our own lives…and she does have choices.”  He rose to his feet, lifted Jesipam from her Emmillan’s lap and carried the little girl back to her mattress.  There he laid her down, covered her with a blanket and then strode back to Emmillan.

Jesipam sat up.  Neither Emmillan nor Memre noticed she wasn't settling down to sleep.  A gremlin of a thought occurred to her: she could probably wander all over Children’s Court, or even out one of the doors, and no one would notice.  She got up, still wearing the wolf head amulet, and carefully picked her way between the sleepers - toward an unguarded door.

So started a journey that would lead her outside the protection of the castle walls and into the greater world where, over the years, her fate would intertwine with the fate of her people in ways no one could anticipate.

To Color the Wind -Book 2 :

The Golden Stag

(Recommended for readers age 13 and up.)

(From the book cover)

Genanem looked at Jesipam with a wistful expression.  "This is probably your last Spring Festival in Children's Court.  You're almost grown.  I expect you'll ascend next year – then you'll have to choose which House you want to live in the rest of your life."

Jesipam laughed.  "Oh Genanem!  I have years before I need to make that choice! "

"I don't know, child.  Your uncle has been coming around pretty often lately.  From the way he's talking, it sounds as though he expects you back at Red House next year.  He's a House ruler, and House rulers tend to get their way..."

Jesipam leaned in toward Genanem and whispered, "I know what my uncle expects!  He told me so himself.  He expects me to marry my cousin, Keetse!  He can't make me do that.  I'm living at Gold House now... and my father is a House ruler too!"

Genanem looked into her eyes.  She seemed sad.  "I'm afraid you won't be able to hide out here pretending to be a servant forever."

Jesipam looked away, not wanting to hear the words.  For the past few years she and her younger sister had enjoyed relative security hiding out as servants-in-training.  She would have to declare her lineage when she made her ascension, the rite of passage declaring her to be an adult.  Passing as servant allowed to her fit in and feel accepted.  She knew that acceptance would end if people knew she was the daughter of the despised Lord of Blue House.  And then there were her father's threats...  Jesipam shuddered.  She hoped to find a way to avoid that confrontation, but she hadn’t found a way yet.   It was all coming too soon!

 To Color the Wind -

Book 3 :

King's Capture

(Recommended for readers age 13 and up.)

(From the book cover)

Jesipam shook her head. “But why does everything here have to be so secretive? It’s ridicules!”

Blonre took her hands in his and looked into her eyes.  “Mosquito, I agree that it is a sad state of affairs – that people have to resort to such extreme measures.  It would be better if there was more trust here – if people could be as open as they are at Gold House, or even Red House, but they are not.  That is why we are here: to put things right.”  He gave her fingers a squeeze.  “With your help, we can divert power away from Beslre and stop the reign of terror that makes everyone so afraid to be more open, so afraid to trust.”

Jesipam looked into Blonre’s face.  His deep brown eyes pleaded with her to join him, but the plan he suggested endangered both of their lives and the lives of others as well.  Still, he waited for her answer.  He looked so passionately committed to the cause of freeing Blue House.

She closed her eyes and reached out with her mind searching her dream-answer-place for guidance.  No words came to answer her query.  However, when Jesipam opened her eyes, she saw Blonre bathed in a brilliant golden light that stretched at least two arms length from his body. Myriad lines of connection radiated from his aura in a rainbow array of colors.  If ever a man were chosen as an agent of destiny for a whole House, he would have to look like this!” Jesipam decided.

She met Blonre’s gaze and drew in a deep breath. “So tell me, what is the next step?”
